Nov 25 | Athlete produced film awared best mtn adventure film @Kendal

Super honored that Samsara won "Best Film on Mtn. Adventure" in the UK at the Kendal Mountain Film Festival. Its so cool that the awards are original pieces of art by Andy Parkin, a climber-artist who I really appreciate! Also my good friends at Sender Films took the grand prize for "Alone on the Wall", featuring TNF athlete Alex Honnold on his Half Dome and Moonlight buttress free solos. They just finished a 6 episode TV show called "First Ascent" which is going to air worldwide on National Geographic Adventure Channel in 2010. Stay tuned for the air-dates of episode 2 about our Vertical Carnival quest in South America and all the other madness...

37volcano_lastdaybanner THE ACOMPLISHMENT
Friday 20th of November; rarely in life something goes exactly according to planed; this was exactly the case, things went better than planed. The athletes finished the Challenge in 8 days and 11 hours.

Willie Benegas said “If we were to do it again today, with what we have learned we would probably do it in 6 days”. Juan Carlos Sagastume complemented saying “now we have to look forward, towards the future, and see what new challenges this brings us”

They climbed up 37 volcanoes, reached the summit, and then they climbed down.

Today we held a press conference inside the TNF store in Guatemala, we had media coverage from all over the country; TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, etc.

The Challenge was a success, the athletes finished with a few bumps and bruises, their legs cut up and their knees and feet swollen, but overall they are doing very well, they returned home safe and sound.

Tomorrow there is another conference planed inside the Oakland Mall, where anyone can attend. We are expecting about 400 listeners.

Hopefully we will have more images and video to send your way soon…

After this they will take on these volcanoes:
35 Ipala

37 Quezaltepeque

37volcano_update9_volcanoes

This is the fist time (or at least the first documented one) that some one has climbed the 37 volcanoes of Guatemala (These are all the volcanoes of the country) in less than 10 days; actually it will be in about 8 and a half days if they finish today in the afternoon. This is a one of a kind Challenge in the history of Guatemala.

We, at The North Face, feel very proud of both athletes and are looking forward to continue supporting these kind of Challenges and athletes; that change the world with their actions rather than their words; and they NEVER STOP EXPLORING.

If you are lucky enough to experience the extreme pleasure of a deep water soloing sojourn to Mallorca, there is a good chance you will meet deep water solo pioneer, Miquel Riera, a veritable living legend. Miquel is one of the coolest guys you could ever hope to meet, with an undying psyche for climbing, women, and partying. I followed Miquel around one day for a trip off the beaten path. This was perhaps the most intimidating day of the trip with rough waters and virgin rock!!! Enjoy the latest Psicoblog. Cheers. Cedar

Nov 18 | 37 Volcanoes in 10 Days: Day 8 - 29 Tamed & 8 Left

(In English and Espanol)

IN ENGLISH
DAY 8: The athletes are hurting; their feet have blisters, their knees and shins scraped and torn because of all the vegetation and rock that has brushed against them. Their metal sharpness is getting weaker and the physical strengths gauge is near empty.

We had a chance to talk to them today; “We hope to finish by noon tomorrow” said Juan Carlos. “We think this will be over in 8 days and a half”.

They are heading over to Tahual volcano right now.

We will keep you up to date in the afternoon,
THE NORTH FACE® GUATEMALA TEAM

Nov 17 | 37 Volcanoes in 10 Days: Day 7 - 24 Down 13 To Go

(In English and Espanol)

ENGLISH
Day 7 of the Challenge, 24 volcanoes down, 13 to go. Today, they will take on:
25. Las Flores
26. Culma
27. Vivoras
28. Chingo
29. Tahual

37volcano_update6_volcanoes
Last night on the volcano Tecuamburro Juan Carlos and Willie were vigorously tested; they got lost on their way down the volcano. This cost them about 6 hours. They will try to get this time back today.

Juan Carlos and Willie are in good physical and mental shape, they agree that the hardest challenges are behind them and are looking forward to putting Guatemala on the map for adventure travellers.

It’s very impressive to see the people in Guatemala getting involved with the challenge; people come by the RV and ask us if we need any help and how are we doing. The few seconds they have had on national TV has helped make this journey a country journey, instead of a 2 man journey. The whole country is supporting them.

We will keep you posted,
The North Face® Guatemala Team

Nov 15 | Live On PBS Wedsday @8pm!!

Starting to get excited to see the final films from the "Caves of Mustang" project: ON PBS NOV 18 @8pm. Wish we actually had a TV! The word on the street is that they are going to show two hr long pieces from the discoveries of ancient artwork, human remains and wild climbing action. It was the most mind-blowing adventure I'll probably ever experience in my lifetime: a full on Indiana Jones style horseback and lasso thriller on the Tibetan plateau.

Nov 13 | 181 Countries Came Together for Climate Action

It was exciting to see the awareness needle move on Saturday, October 24th for the International Day of Climate Action. We as a company, along with people in 181 countries came together for the most widespread day of environmental action in the planet's history.

350.org, the organization behind the effort that is striving to reduce the world’s amount of carbon in the atmosphere to 350 parts per million, reported that over 5,200 “actions” were taken that day. That meant that over 5,200 groups of people formed for a picture or video that displayed the number 350 to bring attention to this critical number.

The North Face was active in trying to raise awareness around this initiative. We hung banners in our retail store windows, took over our homepage on our website, took action at our Endurance Challenge, and at our corporate sales meeting that fell on the day of action. We also created a video that included our associates from all over the world from China to Europe to Canada to the US. We all recognize the importance of this issue and encourage everyone to pass the 350 message on.

Just because the International Day of Climate Action has passed, doesn’t mean the chance to get involved is over. Visit their site for next steps, such as signing the pledge that will shown to the leaders in Copenhagen in December, or volunteering to deliver one of the many 350 photos to your local leaders. Just as the folks at 350.org continue on, so we as a company will continue on our sustainability journey. Individually and collectively, we will make a difference.
