Mar 31 | Michael Wardian to Run 151 Miles in Morocco

As Michael Wardian preps to leave for the six stage, 151 mile race Marathon de Sables in Morocco, we caught up with him at a rare patch of downtime. The race starts on Sunday, April 4, and we’ll do our best to keep you updated with the latest and greatest from Michael’s race.

TNF: This is your third time heading to Marathon De Sables, correct?

MW:  This is my third time going. My first time was in 2000, and last year, 2009, was the second time. In 2000 I finished 26th overall and first American, and last year I finished eighth overall, and claimed the best finish overall by American.

TNF: What drew you to Marathon Des Sables in the first place?

MW: It’s one of those epic adventures that is so unbelievably hard to wrap your head around. I mean I have pictures of Lawrence of Arabia going through my mind, and carrying all your gear, including food, and water in one of the harshest environments in the world. Actually, a former roommate of mind saw it in a magazine and said “This looks like something you’d be into.” I was just out of school so I saved up for two years, hoarded my vacation time at work and eventually scrapped up enough money to make it work.

The first time I went to finish and not die. Last year I went to win, and I learned a lot. This year I have fine tuned many aspects to really be in contention again.

TNF: So what are you doing different from last year?

MW: I focused on tweaking my food, the nutrition during the race. You have to carry all of your food the entire time, you’re not able to restock at aid stations, except for water, so I want to make sure I have the best food for the race. I am also really dialing-in water carrying, to be able to slip the provided water bottle into your pack easily and quickly and not have to stop, rearrange and get the water in your pack. Hopefully this is going to make the transitions a lot easier and I won’t lose minutes dealing with packing and repacking. Clothing is also key. In the past I have brought too many clothes, so I’m trying to streamline that.

TNF: What are you bringing in terms of gear and clothes?

MW: I’m wearing the PR short and the Hydrogen Jacket is essential. Also, the Fireroad Socks and the GTD Crew. Another essential is a TNF Buff I picked up at a race in South America.

TNF: How much does your pack weigh?

MW: Right now my pack is huge. I’m competing against these guys who have 15 pound packs. I’m trying to figure out what I really need.

TNF: The Marathon Des Sables is a stage race, meaning at the end of each stage, you stop, sleep and then get going. What’s your favorite stage?

MW: I love doing the long day. Last year the long stage fell on my birthday – that was the coolest.

Mar 10 | The North Face Single-Track Awarded “Best Debut” by Runner’s World

SAN LEANDRO, California—March 10, 2010—The North Face, the world’s premier supplier of authentic, innovative and technically advanced outdoor apparel, equipment and footwear, today announced The North Face Single-Track running shoe was awarded "Best Debut” by Runner’s World magazine, the worldwide authority on running information. The Single-Track, new for 2010, is a lightweight, everyday neutral training and racing shoe designed for runners.

Runner’s World's Spring Trail Shoe Guide, which appears in the April 2010 issue, features the latest and greatest of trail running shoes, as the ultimate guide for runners. The "Best Debut" honor is bestowed upon products that are new to the market and exhibit superior technology, design and performance.

Runner’s World notes the Single-Track works well on both road and trail and was found to have the softest heel of the shoes tested as well as an extremely flexible forefoot.  The review recommends the Single-Track for runners who desire a general-purpose shoe that works well on both roads and trails.

The Single-Track upper is crafted of an abrasion-resistant synthetic leather upper with a tight weave mesh and external tongue scree-collar to protect from any unwanted debris. The C-Delta metatarsal fit system provides medial and lateral stability, while the Ortholite Northotic footbed creates supreme comfort underfoot. Built on The North Face’s Unleashed Performance platform, this neutral lasted silhouette features a new X-Dome Cradle technology providing high-impact cushioning, stabilization, and rebound upon heel strike. X-2 dual-density cushioned EVA midsole, ESS Snake Plate to protect against stone bruising, and Tenacious Grip high-abrasion, off-road sticky rubber combine for the ultimate minimal, efficient running shoe. The Single-Track is available for both men and women runners.

“We are proud to have worked so closely with our ultra-running athletes to create the Single-Track. With their help we were able to determine how to create the ultimate high-performance, no-nonsense minimalist shoe without sacrificing protection and durability,” said JP Borod, Footwear Product Director for The North Face. “We are thrilled the editors at Runner’s World recognized this shoe during their intensive testing process.”

For more than 40 years The North Face athlete team has defined the limits of what is humanly possible, and continually works with Research, Design & Development, creating innovative designs that push new technologies and inspire cutting-edge products.

Early this march Cedar Wright and Jeremy Collins headed out to Arkansas to give a presentation with  for the American Alpine Club.cedar showed up a day early to get some climbing in and brought his GH1 to play with. He shot and edited this piece in a day, so that he could show the video at the beginning of thepresentation....he was doing color correction and compressing an hour before the show!!! People were psyched to see their home area on the big screen!

It turns out that the climbing and scene in Arkansas not to be missed...Cedar highly recommends a visit to Horseshoe Ranch, one of the most unique climber camps in the country.

Mar 04 | All in a Winter's Day

Speaking of the Single-Track, here it is in action again through the course of a day last week! I love the sunshine as much as the next guy, but winter in Seattle's just not supposed to look like this. This video is my day in a nutshell, and it was a lot of fun, but with climate change in mind it was a bit alarming too.

If this ain't global warming, I don't know what is. I'm loving the sun, but it's just not normal!
