Rock Climber | Kevin Thaw

Kevin ThawKevin "The Frozen One" Thaw has consistently performed at the top level of many disciplines – alpine, big wall, traditional, ice, mixed and bouldering – and shows no sign of slowing down. He was born and raised in the United Kingdom and left the day after his finals in Mechanical and Production Engineering. Scotland and the Alps made him hungry and ready for a long stint in the U.S., specifically Yosemite. He's often heralded as the U.K.’s number one all-around climber.

Jul 12 | Chew Valley : Outdoors With Kids

Chew Valley is the title of the “Local” guidebook, a moorland gritstone region encompassed by the North West corner of the Peak District National Park.

These western flanks of the Pennines offer perfect escapism from the Greater Manchester conurbation, ideally located and with more than 1500 precipitous voyages documented with topos in the guidebook it’s a perfect springboard into the outdoors, specially climbing.

The U Project (webpage posted below) is a local Council supported organisation that grants first outdoor steps and climbing experience to all comers, free of charge. Each Saturday a group who’ve pre-registered via the Oldham Outdoor Pursuits website gather at Dovestone reservoir and stroll up Chew Valley to Rob’s Rocks. A perfectly suited cliff one's for first steps above the ground. The main portion of the steep seeking contingent is always of school age even though it’s not specifically advertised for Kids.

I started climbing in this same and feel granting aid to local aspirants is almost the completion of a cycle? I’ll be spending fair-weathered Saturday afternoons up at Rob’s until mid-August.

Apr 05 | Borneo Video Dispatch #1 - Kota Kinabalu

5th April 2009
Kota Kinabalu
We've arrived and are starting the logistic arrangements for three weeks of life on a jungle big wall. Should prove quite the test of all our abilities in having six of us sharing the precipitous environment! Must say I'm very glad for the collective experience of our team, I landed last night after a very quick home turn around following Patagonian time; awoke on the plane feeling a tad disorientated wondering where I was heading on a couple of occasions. Apparently it rains every day here in Malaysia, luckily hasn't just yet but undoubtedly I'll start the cycle having documented such? Feels very hot n' humid which I think makes for a tougher transition for the team members fresh from winter, time in the summer hemisphere for me will hopefully have me more acclimatised. Acquisition of food, water bottles and fuel is the order of the day. Kevin Thaw
