Feb 06 | The countdown to the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games is ON!

The Olympics begin one year from today, and to celebrate, we’ve got some exciting news as the sport of freeskiing prepares to make its historic Olympic debut.

The North Face, an original partner of U.S. Freeskiing, is taking the next step in its dedication to freeskiing by partnering in the creation of the first U.S. Freeskiing Rookie Team. Additionally, we are thrilled to welcome elite freeskiier Maddie Bowman to The North Face family.

The North Face has been a friend of freeskiing ever since it was inspired out of Big Mountain skiing, and we’re excited to continue our long-time support of the sport and its incredible athletes.

“Since the beginning of the freeskiing movement, The North Face has maintained an on-going commitment to helping elevate the sport to the global stage,” said Mike Jaquet, CMO of the United States Ski and Snowboard Association. “Starting before freeskiing was recognized as an Olympic sport, we’ve worked very closely with The North Face to identify unique opportunities to further the development of the sport at the grassroots level, both on the athlete side and through competition. It’s great to work with sponsors that are so committed to fostering the sport’s growth.”

U.S. Freeskiing’s new Rookie Team provides support and training with expert coaches for teen athletes looking to advance their skills and competition level in both halfpipe and slopestyle skiing with the goal of eventually making the U.S. Freeskiing Pro Team.

The support of The North Face has been instrumental to the growth of the new Olympic sport of freeskiing, including U.S. Freeskiing's elite pro team and its new development-focused rookie team, which both foster talent that will help the USA be Best in the World in Olympic freeskiing leading up to the 2014 Olympic Winter Games and beyond. The 10-member U.S. Freeskiing Rookie Team is coached by Ben Verge (halfpipe) and DJ Montigy (slopestyle).

Maddie Bowman, who comes to The North Face as a two-time X Games medalist and recently took gold in both the X Games and U.S. Grand Prix last month, will be in good company with us. She joins top freeskiing athletes Tom Wallisch and Devin Logan, as well as up-and-coming athletes Chris Laker and Carson LeHouillier on the amateur side, as TNF-sponsored freeskiing athletes.

Also, we are proud to continue evolving The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS), which was founded in 2010. PPOS is one of the few open-format series in which both amateurs and pros have an opportunity to compete in the freeskiing arena. Since its inception, it has grown into a grassroots pipeline for amateur athletes to hone their skills and eventually qualify for top-tier events like the X Games, U.S. Grand Prix and the Olympics. This year, two Rookie Team members, Alexander Ferreira of Aspen, Colo., and Annalisa Drew of Andover, Mass., earned top honors in the halfpipe competition at the second PPOS stop in Whistler, giving them automatic entries into the X Games – a first time opportunity for both up-and-coming athletes!

Be sure to check out a one-hour broadcast of the Whistler PPOS event February 7 on CBS Sports Network. We couldn’t think of a more perfect way to celebrate the Sochi 2014 Winter Games year-out mark.

It’s going to be an incredible year ahead, and we hope you will join us for the journey to Sochi! Remember: Never stop exploring.

Jan 10 | The SWATCH Freeride World Tour by The North Face 2013

MacDaddy
After four days of very snowy British Columbia, Canada weather, the SWATCH Freeride World Tour by The North Face 2013 (FWT) officially announces the competition day on Mackenzie Peak’s “Mac Daddy” face Friday, January 11, 2013.

The exciting first stop of the global big mountain freeriding competition can be witnessed from anywhere in the world via the live webcast available here at www.neverstopexploring.com and www.freerideworldtour.com. Friday’s competition day will start at 9:00am PST and will begin with the men’s snowboarding, and then men’s freeskiing runs.  The competition day will continue with women’s snowboarding and finally women’s freeskiing.

"We anticipated Revelstoke would likely provide snowy weather and prepared ourselves for the storms and challenges they bring to the competition. After recent heavy snowfall, this year in particular is setting up to be some of the best conditions we have ever experienced on the FWT,” stated FWT Americas Competition Director Bryan Barlow. “Going to the end of our weather window is not a surprise, but is going to be well worth the wait for this first competition of the 2013 Freeride World Tour.”

Revelstoke Mountain Resort has received nearly three feet of snow in the past seven days and the snow continues to fall.  A cold, dry, high-pressure system has been forecasted for the Revelstoke area starting today (Thurs. Jan. 10), which will make for optimal safe snow conditions and ideal visibility for the day of competition.

The excitement for the first stop of the 2013 FWT is also felt among the athletes.

“I’m really looking forward to this season. With lots of new riders and great events, I’m sure it will be bigger than ever. The kick-off in Revelstoke is going to be great. A mountain like that is the perfect place for a freeride competition. I’m just glad to be a part of it and no matter what, I’m going to enjoy the show,” remarked defending FWT 2012 Men’s Freesking Champion, Reine Barkered of Sweden.

In its first year of a truly globalized competition structure, The Freeride World Tour is designed to allow the world’s best big mountain freeride athletes to advance their competition careers and achievements. Revelstoke Mountain Resort and the “Mac Daddy” are ideal locations for the first stop of the 2013 FWT with remote, steep, and exposed backcountry terrain, allowing for an exciting and unique North American freeriding venue.

The Freeride World Tour is the premier big mountain Freeskiing and snowboarding tour in the world, featuring the sport’s top athletes competing on the biggest mountain resort venues. Riders compete one at a time and receive an overall score from a judging panel based on numerous categories including line difficulty, control, fluidity, technique and style. The event features natural terrain features found on the most exciting format possible. A start gate is positioned at the summit with a finish gate at the bottom. The best complete runs win. The sport is similar in context to big-wave surfing with skiers and snowboarders choosing impossible-looking lines through cornices and cliff-faces and couloirs. Competition runs are enhanced with progressive big jumps and mach-speed turns at an aggressive pace.

Jan 07 | Featured Philanthropy :: Protect Our Winters

POWorg_logo_wide_RGB

Protect Our Winters was founded in 2007 by pro snowboarder Jeremy Jones to address the gap between the effects that climate change was already having in our mountains and the action being taken by the snow sports community to fight it. Winter sports is a $66 billion industry that supports over 211,000 jobs in our local mountain communities - so to us, climate change is serious business. Without a stable climate, our industry, our jobs, the economies of mountain communities everywhere and the valued lifestyle of winter will be gone.

As we start a new year, it's our goal to continue our work teaching high school students about the effects of climate change, how important it is for them to appreciate and protect the outdoors and to become the next generation of environmental leaders. In our community, professional athletes are the greatest influencers, and to have athletes such as Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Ingrid Backstrom and Nick Martini meet and talk to students about climate change and the environment is once of the most powerful ways to inspire them to really get involved. Our young students are the ones who are going to find themselves directly feeling the effects of climate change, so it's our responsibility to provide them with the tools to get involved now.

Oct 30 | The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series Announces 2013 Schedule

PPOS1
The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series Continues to Grow

Athlete Registration Opens Thursday, November 8, 2012, 10 AM MST

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH (Oct. 29, 2012)– As the first traces of snow dust North American mountain peaks, freeskiing athletes everywhere are revving up for another exciting winter competition season. Falling in line with the anticipation of a great winter, The North Face today announced venues for The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS), including Copper Mountain, CO (Dec. 8-9); Whistler Blackcomb, BC (Jan. 14-17); Waterville Valley, NH (Feb. 23) and Northstar California Resort, CA (March 8-10).

“This year’s events are perfectly scheduled to provide prime advancement opportunities for athletes ready to take their freeskiing career to the next level,” said Barb Hamblett PPOS Event Director with Mountain Sports International, Inc. (MSI). “Spectators can expect to see exciting top level competition at all four PPOS stops this season.”

All four PPOS events are part of the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) competition schedule. The Copper Mountain and Northstar California Resort stops will both be International Ski Federation (FIS) sanctioned NORAM CUP events with athletes earning FIS points. Athlete registration for all four PPOS stops will open Thursday, Nov. 8, 2012 at 10 a.m. MST.

“FIS is excited to be able to integrate The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series events in Copper Mountain, CO and Northstar, CA into the 2012-13 FIS Freestyle NORAM CUP,” said Konrad X Rotermund FIS Freestyle Continental Cup Coordinator-Americas. “These events will provide a great opportunity for athletes to get their needed FIS points to be part of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games qualification process and/or earn the opportunity to be the NORAM CUP Champion. Recognizing schedules are very full in North America, it is great to be able to cooperate with the already established PPOS events to give the athletes multiple avenues to meet their competitive goals in a single event.”

PPOS4
Founded in 2010, The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series (PPOS) features slopestyle and halfpipe skiing competitions with $55,000 in total prize value up for grabs. As one of the only open-format event series, amateurs have the opportunity to compete alongside top pros.

"The North Face is excited to bring yet another season of freeskiing competition opportunities to athletes, both professional and amateur, across North America," said The North Face Director of Sports Marketing Katie Ramage. "The progression of the sport of freeskiing is important to us, and this competition format is another way for us to support that movement."

Slopestyle skiing takes place in a venue comprised of man-made features such as rails, boxes and jumps contained on a single slope. Halfpipe skiing takes place in a halfpipe similar to those used for halfpipe snowboarding. Skiers accelerate through the pipe to gain increased height jumping out of the halfpipe while simultaneously executing challenging grabs, spins, flips and other maneuvers. Skiers string together a series of aerials from the halfpipe in a single run. Judging is based on overall impression, including content, difficulty of run, style and use of park or pipe. Both slopestyle and halfpipe skiing will make their Olympic debut in 2014 at the Sochi, Russia Winter Games. The PPOS will work in conjunction with the Association of Freeskiing Professionals (AFP) on competition judging with Steele Spence serving as head judge for the series.

“The North Face Park and Pipe Open Series is very important for North American freeskiing athletes,” said Steele Spence, PPOS series head judge. “The series is a stepping stone for athletes hoping to progress to the top level of competition. The events are very well organized with a full panel of AFP certified judges and courses at world-class resorts.”

This is evidenced by the global acknowledgement of the AFP World Ranking, and most recently the inclusion of Halfpipe and Slopestyle skiing in the 2014 Olympics.
