[NO NEW UPDATES] Expedition Dispatches: Meru Shark's Fin

August 2008

Welcome to the Meru Shark's Fin Expedition - 2008 (Sept. 1 - Oct. 12)

Shark’s Fin Lures Climbers

Ath_conrad_227x227 The North Face elite athletes Conrad Anker, Jimmy Chin, and Renan Ozturk aim to climb the central line on Shark’s Fin, a stunning unclimbed feature defining the east face of Meru, a 6,450-meter (21,161 feet) peak located in the Garwhal Himalaya of northern India, high above the Ganges river.

Ath_jimmy_227x227 Shark’s Fin, 6,310 meters (20,702 feet), has been attempted for more than 20 years, yet still remains unclimbed, including a 2003 attempt by Anker. The elusive granite feature, which resembles a shark's fin, is the exemplar of high altitude alpine big wall climbing, characterized by a 1400 meter (4,000-foot) climb with the final 700 meters (2,000 feet) an overhanging big wall.

Ath_renan_227x227 The prospective line will encompass all the disciplines of alpine style climbing: steep ice, exposed free climbing and hard nailing. The team will use four ropes and carry gear and supplies for two weeks on the wall, free climbing until forced to aid climb, likely on the thin cracks of the "fin."
